The other day the roommate came in and told us that there were cops down by the Krispy Kream in Kitchener, directing traffic in and out of the doughnut shop. The thing is, it's just a regular day, no grand opening, no special deals, just business as usual.
And you wonder why so many people here are overweight.

Last night I had a dream that I proved something NP-complete. I don't remember what the problem was (something to do with graphs), but I do remember that I was pretty happy, and the whole academic community was applauding my achievements.
The dreams I have when I'm sick.

If I made a switch commercial, here's what it would be like:
(Cheezy mono-harmonic music playing in the background)
Me: "So my first computer was an Apple II, it had a black and white 8 inch monitor, no disk drive, and about as little memory."
(Camera cuts to a different region of my face for a close up, music changes pace)
Me: "When I played Risk on it, I had to switch between the game disk and the startup disk about 4 times before the game was finally loaded."
(Camera swings back, cheezy music returns)
Me: "But then I saw this machine with Windows 3.1. It had colour, a hard disk, more memory, and it had colour. I had to switch. And I've been a Windows user ever since."
(The End).

Why are so many people in this world so selfish that they can't see how others are suffering by their ignorance?
I am drunk and pissed off at the world.

I finally saw Bowling for Columbine last night. There were many laughs, characteristic of Michael Moore. But some scenes were also completely riveting, including surveillance videos from the day of the shooting at Columbine, and vivid accounts of forgotten US atrocities across the world.
Also thought provoking is that he doesn't place the blame on guns alone. Many people have blamed guns, ignorant parents, bullying, violent movies, Marilyn Manson, etc. But no one has touched on the idea that maybe the media's choice of covering select news items as a factor. The overwhelming media coverage in the US that lie toward violence, rape, and murder - because that's "where the story is" - can be more devastating than watching a badly made Arnold movie. It's telling people that the real world sucks, and is full of people who want to harm you. When you watch a movie, or listen to a song, at least you can separate yourself from the fictional environment; but when you are watching the news, there is no separation, and that's where the difference lies.
I think one of the most powerful parts of the documentary was when Moore and two survivors from Columbine convinced K-Mart to stop selling handgun amunition. That is a clear example of social responsibility.

I have to get a new G string.
I broke the one I had.
It's for my guitar that I don't know how to play.

I wonder what it's like, sauntering about, always casting your eyes toward the ground.
Everyday, on my way to classes, walking between lectures, going home after the Bomber, all I see are people staring at the pavement as they walk.
I still remember the everlasting words we used to yell, "the ground will always be there".
People should be able to stand up proud and look everyone in the eyes. There's no need to dwell on the black marks left on the sidewalk by overchewed bubble gum. Afterall, we are not bottom feeders. Too many times have I wanted to lash out at people and tell them to straighten their shoulders and stiffen that hunchback.
I guess I'm a firm believer of proper posture and presentation in a human being.

I just saw the end of a story on Save Karyn on CNN this morning.
I think that's the epitome of what's wrong with our society today.
You spend money you don't have, build up a ridiculous debt, ask other people to pay it for you (she paid about 12% of the $20 000), and become an international celebrity. People like that just make me mad. And the fact that there are people who actually gave her money makes me sad.

You just can't say no to a girl when she asks you for money.
[23:12] Ming: So I hear you got suckered into going
[23:13] Anon: not as far as i know...
... (1 hour later)
[00:11] Anon: i crumbled, it's really hard to say no to (name witheld).. i think if she just asked me for money i'd just have to give it to her
[00:20] Ming: I knew it

I still remember the poem we had to memorize in Grade 6. It inspired the wearing of the poppy, and sparked the respect that everyone has for the veterans of our nation. At the dawn of a new millenium and in the face of newfound worldwide tension, I think it's fitting for everyone to read and reflect upon.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow.
Loved and were loved, and now
We lie in Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe,
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
It ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies
Grow in Flanders fields.
--Lt Col John McCrae

Hell month is finally over, now instead of myriads of midterms, I only have three assignments due next week. In another month and eight days, it will all be over, and I will need to start looking for housing in Seattle.
Anyone know of a place in Seattle?

I am becoming weary of the effect that OS has on my social life. I've been spending the majority of my waking hours in the lab lately, and have not arrived home before 1 or 2 in the morning since ... well, I can't remember.
I'm also becoming more and more tired everyday. Today I fell asleep in the C&D in the Math building, and when I woke up, the right half of my body was still asleep, and I had the tingling/itching/needles in my body feeling for a good 5 minutes.
We're almost done, I hope. The last thing on our to do list is the clock replacement algorithm (we have it implemented, it just doesn't work, so I guess we really don't have it). And we need to do testing too, which is bound to break stuff.
My bed beckons.

I'm pretty sure I dreamed about some OS algorithm last night, and seemed to have things figured out, until I woke up, and couldn't remember for the life of me exactly what I dreamed about. It was weird because there was a moment between the dream state and the waking state that I was wondering what I was dreaming about, and seemed to vaguely remember, and then I opened my eyes, and everything was gone.
Funny caption of the day (actually from two days ago, Thursday's National Post, A16): Terrorist activity feared on Phuket resort island. [Emphasis mine]

Some of us have wondered why the poppies have a black centre this year. Well, apparently, they were black all the way until 1980, when the Canadian Legion changed the colour to green in order to reflect the hills on which the battles of WWI were fought.
But now, it has become fashionable to wear the black poppies, and people have been "fighting" to get their hands on the old ones. So the Legion just said, that's it, everyone is getting black.

Just for you Matt, just for you.
And Fed Hall lost my jacket yesterday (how do you lose a jacket at coat check), so today I have to go there and see what to do. It was a cold walk home.
